Sustainable Remediation White Paper Published

07/07/2009

GES is very pleased to announce the publication of the white paper “Integrating Sustainable Principles, Practices, and Metrics Into Remediation Projects” by the U.S. Sustainable Remediation Forum, or “SURF.” The paper has been published in a special edition of Remediation Journal (Wiley Periodicals, Inc.). GES is a member of SURF and Joseph Keller, PE, principal engineer and industrial program manager, is a contributor to this document.

GES supports the mission of SURF, which is “to establish a framework that incorporates sustainable concepts throughout the remedial action process while continuing to provide long-term protection of human health and the environment and achieving public and regulatory acceptance.” SURF is a voluntary organization composed of representatives from industry, several federal agencies, state regulators, consulting firms, and educational institutions. The group focuses on “finding scientific and engineering approaches and alternatives that reduce the secondary… impacts of remediation on the environment.”

The paper communicates various aspects of this important topic, including sustainability concepts and practices as applied to remediation and the barriers to its successful implementation, as well as a comprehensive collection of case studies that illustrate the impact of sustainability throughout the project life cycle.

You can download the paper as a pdf from the SURF library at www.sustainableremediation.org

Future issues of Remediation Journal will encourage ongoing dialogue through a Q&A column from the SURF Sustainable Remediation Panel: www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/60500173

GES is proud to be affiliated with SURF and we look forward to bringing the cumulative knowledge of this organization to our clients’ projects. GES’ “green remediation team” is committed to the responsible consideration and innovative application of sustainable remediation principles.
